Fishing for Knowledge in a Great Novel

My students need novels. This would be awesome to have in my classroom for EVERY student. In addition, adding an AUDIO version with a listening center would increase engagement for auditory learners.

My Students

I teach 4th Grade in a large Title 1 rural school in NC.

They are made of an ethnically diverse population; yet, a lot of them are unable to get help at home.

Our school is made of approximately 80% free/reduced price lunch and many economically disadvantaged students. Even with their challenging situations, they love learning and come to school with positive attitudes eager to learn! I feel they will benefit immensely as learners working with their peers in a fun and engaging atmosphere.

My Project

Reading the novel, Fish in a Tree, together as a class will enhance the excitement of being a lifelong reader. As a classroom teacher, I believe it is my job to develop a love of reading. This can be done when students have access to their own book.

Offering a listening center and audio version of the book will allow students to not only read to themselves or with a partner, but to follow along as someone reads to them when needed.

Having these books accessible, students would read more, actually be engaged in what they are reading, and thereafter, increase their overall reading levels. Students would be able to read these novels, by Hunt, during their independent reading time, respond to themes and main ideas in their reading journals, and develop skills to understand character's motivations. Having these engaging and interesting books will help students stay excited about reading, keep them reading frequently and increase their reading levels.

Additionally, their lives will be strongly affected, as they will be generating and strengthening enjoyment of reading. Furthermore, as they become more proficient at reading, their confidence will soar allowing them to feel more confident in trying to read other materials.
