Fishing for a Good Book

My students need fish to see living examples of animals studied in science and to be able to make connections to related non-fiction books in the library.

My Students

I want to turn our school library into a place where kids can read and experience the animals they love to learn about.

Our school is the smallest public elementary school in our town.

We have about 390 kids from preK to fifth grade including two autistic classes. Integrating science into my library curriculum has intensified my student's interest in life sciences, making the library an exciting place to visit and learn. We have two bearded dragons, a goldfish aquarium and three betta fish. Adding a freshwater community tank would add to our growing interest in animals and ecosystems.

My Project

By setting up a community aquarium in my library, all 390 students will be able to observe and appreciate an ecosystem and real life science in action. In our state, fifth graders are required to take a science test at the end of the year. I will use the aquarium to begin exposing all of our school to the life science vocabulary they will need to be successful learners when they get to fifth grade.

This project will enhance the development of scientific vocabulary of my students and encourage visits to the library.
