This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As a counselor in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with many challenges throughout their lives, which impact their school and home lives.
Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to expand, inspire and connect students with nature, while providing lifelong meaningful adventures.
Last school year as I worked with our most troubled youth, I noticed a trend in a passion and or interest for fishing.
They all love it, find it calming yet many do not have the support or equipment needed to take up the sport. Yes, we are a middle school with students in 6th to 8th grade, ranging in ages 11-14 but it's never too early to adopt a healthy hobby.
My Project
I firmly believe that the earlier we engage our youth in a sport and helping others, we will increase their chances of being productive citizens today and in their future. We currently have about one thousand, seven hundred students in our middle school. About 85% are on free or reduced lunch. Unfortunately, money is not abundant among the students and their parents. Thankfully, you don't need a lot of money to make a difference in a person's life. Through the Castaway Club which is a club which focuses on outdoor activities mostly fishing in a competitive manner with each other and other schools. The goal of Castaway is to teach sportsmanship, basic fishing techniques, and nurture a love of fishing, ensuring the sport will continue to prosper for generations to come.
