My Students

My students are small-town kids who see the world through the books they read. We don't have a lot of diversity in our town which is why it is crucial to have novels they can relate to and show them the world around them.

In our classroom, we make books come alive by using the technology available to us.

We do things like Google Lit Trips and create iMovies to help students relate to the characters they meet. We have also done google hangouts with the zookeepers from The one and only Ivan.

My students are at the age where they need to to have relevant content that drives their motivation and deepens their understanding of our society.

My Project

I would like to bring newer novel studies to our classroom to show my students the world around them. Our novels are old and falling apart, not to mention hard for students to relate to.

The book Fish in a Tree shows students how to embrace their talents and to never give up.

Students can relate to the story as it is about a six grader who struggles in class and is bullied. This book will get students thinking critically about how they treat themselves and others.

This grant will fund a classroom set of 25 books. They will be used by two sections of our six grade class.
