My Project
Special education students, particularly those in self-contained classrooms, need calming elements in their environment. Fish have been known to soothe anxiety and stress. Having a fish tank full of fun colorful accessories and cool fish would be an asset to these students, who often struggle with emotional regulation. The fish swimming would interest the students as they try to locate their favorite fish within the tank.
Classroom fish also offer a variety of learning opportunities.
They can practice math skills by counting how many fish are in the tank, what color fish, how many plants, etc. The students can work one writing skills by spelling the names of the types of fish in the tank and making up stories about their new friends. They can also build daily living skills like feeding the fish, helping to clean the tank, as well as making shopping lists of needed supplies when we run out of them.
Overall, having a class pet is a wonderful learning opportunity that I would love to be able to give my students.
