I teach a fabulous group of students who are inspiring, motivating and fun to teach. They are the future readers, writers, mathematicians, computer analysts, engineers, artists and musicians of the world.
I teach in a large, diverse, K-8, high poverty school, in an urban area of Philadelphia that experiences crime.
Our school receives Title I funding and the entire school is eligible for free breakfast and lunch. The students who come to school eager to learn, are from various living situations such as single parents, foster homes, homeless shelters or extended family living. My students have a variety of learning abilities and disabilities including Special Education, ADD, ADHD, vision impairment and English as a Second Language. I am dedicated to meeting their needs daily, along with building their self-esteem and confidence.
My Project
Some of my students have basic needs to attend school. Some need uniform shirts, coats, and gloves. Some children wear the same uniform daily including food stains. As the weather turns colder, students may tend to stay home if they are not properly dressed. I would like to help boost their self confidence and ensure that they are in school daily. I will be sharing these items with the school nurse as well. At lunch or recess, when a child has a food, bathroom or mud accident, we need some extra clothing to give them. I am requesting some coats, umbrellas, lip balm and gloves because some of the students walk to school and the weather is turning colder. We can help them stay warm and dry with these items. We need snacks such as protein bars and chocolate to help cure the rumbles in their tummies. Once the children are warm and full, they can accomplish ANYTHING!
I strive to meet their needs including physiological and safety which are the 2 foundations for Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs.
It really hurts me to see them so hungry for attention and warm clothing.
I would love to build their confidence with these items. Can you imagine the difference that these basics can make in the life of a neglected high poverty child?
Help me set the children up for success knowing they have clean clothing and can come to school energized to learn and bridge the achievement gap. Your donation can have rippling effects in the world to make it a better place.
