This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is full of amazing students! This year, I have 20 fun-loving, happy first graders that I am blessed to call my own. Walking into my classroom, it is immediately noticeable that my students are serious about their reading time. We are on a mission to become the best readers possible.
My students are a diverse group of kids from all over the city.
Our district itself has grown exponentially over the last few years, and our school has as well. My school is a magnet school, which means our kids come from all over the city. They have different upbringings, different social-emotional needs, and speak several different languages and dialects of those languages. In my class alone, 70% of the children speak another language at home. We are bringing many different cultures together in one room, with the common goal of creating a learning environment that all of these children are able to learn in.
My Project
My students came to me at varied levels of readiness. I had some children still unable to remember sight words, while other children were able to read full story books when coming to the classroom. In order to accommodate this range of needs, I need to add books to my classroom that are leveled for my students' independent levels - which range currently from a Level C up to a Level N! The addition of this book cart and all of these leveled books will mean that my students are able to choose engaging books, while allowing me to easily monitor their reading levels and choices. It will give me a greater range of books to work off of while I am conferring with students, and it will ensure that there is no boredom with our current texts!
My class really needs quality leveled texts.
We have a set now, but the students are getting bored with them, and some of them are falling apart. I would love to be able to provide this for my students to give them the opportunity to develop some excitement over new books! My students love to discuss their stamina. Adding these books and this book cart to my classroom will give my students the gift of choice while empowering them to be in charge of their own reading!
