I teach a fabulous group of first grade students who are inspiring, motivating and fun to teach. They are the future readers, writers, mathematicians, computer analysts, engineers, artists and musicians of the world.
I teach in a large, diverse, K-8, high poverty school, in an urban area of Philadelphia that experiences crime.
Our school receives Title I funding and the entire school is eligible for free breakfast and lunch. The students who come to school eager to learn, are from various living situations such as single parents, foster homes, homeless shelters or extended family living.
My students have a variety of learning abilities and disabilities including Special Education, ADD, ADHD, vision impairment and English as a Second Language. I am dedicated to meeting their needs daily, along with building their self-esteem and confidence.

We celebrate 100 days of school with counting, games, making posters with 100 sight words, making edible necklaces with 100 pieces of cereal, filling up a 100s chart with stickers and more.
We are going to try something new with the white crayons. The children will write their numbers and then cover the crayon up with a marker. The numbers will then magically reappear. We need candy to help with our celebration of counting. And we need bandaids and first aid spray in case we get any boo boos during the celebration. You would be surprised how many paper cuts happen especially in the winter when our skin is dry.
These book titles work perfectly with our celebration. Children need to read books at their level and their interest. Many of our books are outdated, old and just not fun to read. I want my students to develop a love of literacy at this crucial beginning stage in their education. Our classroom library needs titles that the children want to read.
These book titles will also help expand our Guided Reading selection for small group time.
