This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This coming academic school year I will be teaching Spanish to both 9th and 10th graders. Students are bright, caring, and driven but as young teenagers some students require incentives to build interest in the subject matter.

I aspire to captivate my students from day one and it's the little things that make a big difference.

However, as a first year teacher, budget constraints can severely limit this. I ask for any and all help from supplies, authentic equipment and anything in between to help jump start my class and give these kids the experiences that will help them succeed in the future.

My Project

I have been looking for an opportunity to join a school where I can apply my knowledge and skills to teach Spanish to students in a classroom. Fortunately, I have been given the opportunity at Lawndale High School in Los Angeles to start one of my dream goals. However, as a first year teacher it falls to me to dress my classroom and provide the best possible learning experience for my students!

While we have tables, chairs, and computers, we lack what makes a classroom feel welcoming and at home.

Through various posters, authentic equipment, decorations, and basic material I know my students will be "Successful" and "Welcomed".

For example, through the use of Plastic Food, holding a toy version of the food they’re trying to learn is great kinesthetic/sensory experience to help kids internalize new vocabulary. However, Plastic Food can go beyond learning new vocabulary, but can be used in a more authentic/real world scenario. Students can also categorize foods on a floor-sized food group poster, set up a classroom grocery store and give student shopping lists and a budget, or have students do oral presentations in the style of their favorite celebrity chefs.

I have chosen items that I believe will get me the biggest bang and positive outcome. Items that will allow my students to have all resources necessary and have no setbacks. I will have students speaking Spanish to each other—and having fun while they do it!
