I am a first year teacher at a high poverty school. The classroom has some items, but not many for organization. Class starts with me trying to locate the next item we are supposed to do. I want each student to be able to write a proper sentence and to recognize all sight words by end of year!
I have 15 students, and as Kindergarten teachers say, "They are my babies." Though I have been at my new school for three weeks, I hate to see the students leave.
We are a high poverty school with a 92% free and reduced lunch rate. My students are very eager to learn new things. They have had substitutes since November (when their previous teacher left) and we are now trying to figure out the classroom and routines together. Some days we simply relearn rules of the classroom, others we relearn our letters. These kids don't always have many resources at home, so I strive to give them everything I can here at school.
My Project
My day consists of me running back and forth from the front of the classroom to the back, trying to locate a pen, Post-it, dry erase marker, paper, etc. The class is not organized and I hope to use a central location for all writing tools within the classroom. My students currently have book bags for their daily books, but they are fabric that sit on the floor, so you can imagine that the once colorful orange and green bags are now black. I hope to use the bags on the backs of my students' chairs so that we can keep our books organized and at our seats.
I hope to have organization in the classroom so that I will be able to use my time with the students wisely.
Instead of wasting 30 seconds here and there trying to locate items, or telling them to go find a book, they will be able to use all of their time to learn and read.
