My Project

Hello, my name is Ms. Torres-Lopez and I am an ESL teacher. This is my first year as an educator and it is more than a blessing to be part of the community. I teach ESL students in first grade and fifth grade. Since space in our school is limited, I am not able to teach in a classroom and offer my students the commodities and learning resources that they deserve. Due to the small space, I teach my ESL fifth graders in the hallway. Something positive about this is that I have the chance to create a space for students to learn because it is almost impossible to do my class inside a regular fifth-grade classroom. Two teachers trying to teach and having students doing different things can be a challenge to encourage them to concentrate and hear what I am instructing. A challenge of being in the hallway is that we do not have regular commodities that a full classroom offers, such as a whiteboard or even seats. Due to my student's lack of language, I try to use visuals to activate their knowledge and create connections with what they know in their home language. I usually use a notebook to write, but having a whiteboard and small whiteboards for students would increase my student's participation and will help them engage more with the lesson. Three teachers are teaching in the hallway and sometimes there are no seats for my students.

I also give prizes to my ESL first graders as an incentive for their good behavior, their participation, and their effort in class.

The portable caddies and paddle boards are perfect to have materials handy and make learning fun.
