This year I'm teaching kindergarten as I am looking to help my students transition into their first year of school. I teach in a remote school in Lanai City, HI. Our students don't have access to many things other kids are exposed to or have access to daily.
Just walking through Target, Walmart or Best Buy and seeing the technology on the shelves is something my students can't easily do.
We don't have access to any of those things on the island, so what some families bring into the home tech-wise is limited. What we can expose them to in school may be all they will know before entering our tech world as adults.
I'm impressed by their creativity and positive attitudes. I love their energy and interest in wanting to learn about the world around them. I recognize what they lack is also a benefit as my students are rich in many other things because of where they live. I feel it's important for my students to know they can accomplish anything. It's my job to model how to reach goals.
My Project
First-year learners have so much to learn and adjust to a new environment in their first year, and COVID added many more layers to their learning. First-year learners must learn how to take care of their materials.
I have selected materials that will make the classroom fun, engaging, safe and vital components to meet educational goals.
My classroom has no whiteboard or chalkboard so this is a high need item. The other items are for the students to have their own materials to practice the skills they'll be learning safely.
Every year, we struggle with dry erase markers and how many we go through in a day, week or year. This year I'd like to reduce that amount by using LCD tablets. We will still use dry erase boards that I've added to the list, but we can reduce their use by sharing some time with the LCD tablets.
The dry erase boards are still important because we must limit paper passing contact. Having the primary lines for students to practice letter and number formation is perfect for daily practice instead of me passing papers back and forth. I like to make the classroom engaging and added the fidget pop-its for the students to practice counting to 100.
These resources will help my students transition back into the classroom after a year of pandemic learning by allowing them to work safely by having their own materials and materials that they can use from a distance. Previous year many materials and tools were limited due to risk of spreading germs so it’s exciting to have my class have these important classroom resources.
