Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students design, build, and program robots to participate in the FIRST Robotics Competition. The students in this predominantly female club come from three different Title I high schools. Through this program, my students learn engineering, construction, and problem solving skills while also learning the importance of setting goals and working together as a team to meet these goals.

Throughout the build and competition season, my students' enthusiasm for each other and STEM shines!

Before the build season starts, they work on fundraising and teaching new members the necessary skills to create a successful robot. During the six weeks that they have to plan, design, build, and test the robot, they work cooperatively for many hours during the week and on weekends, constructing the robot and problem solving their way through any difficulties that arise. Watching these students support each other at competition has been one of the best experiences of my career!

My Project

Each year, my students challenge themselves to more efficiently build the most effective robot that they can. As they have been working toward this goal, they have realized the importance of being able to store their materials in an organized fashion. With a more organized work space, they will be able to quickly find the tools and the parts they need to build the robot, and they will be able to quickly inventory what parts they have in order to determine what parts they need to order.

We need toolboxes.

By providing students with appropriate storage and organizational containers, they will learn first-hand the importance of a clean and organized working environment. The storage containers with we have selected will give the students the opportunity to learn how to effectively sort, organize, and inventory their tools and parts as they work to put a new storage system into place. Students will also learn responsibility as they ensure that tools and parts get returned to the correct locations after they have been used.
