Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fourth year NYC public school reading recovery teacher. I work with approximately 16 children in a low income neighborhood in the South Bronx. 96% of the children in my school receive free lunch.
I work with the lowest level children in four first grade classes. Most of my children have never been exposed to books prior to coming to school, and many do not understand the concepts of letters and words. My students are so limited in what they know and have been exposed to that I need to quickly boost them to an emergent reader level. I have several children that are still learning the alphabet and confusing the letters with each other.
I would like to obtain dry erase markers, water pens, book making supplies (rings and index cards), puzzle cards, translucent counters and magnetic letters to practice what they are learning. The big magnetic letters will help them to remember the order of certain letters in words. The sight cards can be used with partners to practice the words learned during the week. Children can take charge and be independent learners. Students will also make their own books with words they know and are in control of, thus realizing that writing and reading go hand in hand. These learning aids would help reinforce what I am teaching. In addition, they would make learning fun and stimulating.
Thank you for your time, consideration and support of NYC's public school children.
