First Step Tech Skills for Students with Special Needs
My students need a LeapFrog ClickStart in order to begin being comfortable using technology in an academic manner. They need to gain confidence and competency in using a computer with a keyboard and mouse.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My school is a new year-round school currently servicing 9th grade only with a grade level being added each year until we reach capacity. We are a mastery-based school with an emphasis on blended learning and preparing students for college and career.
While their peers have plenty of challenges themselves as students who face countless racial and financial inequalities, my students have challenges on top of those challenges.
My students are primarily on the Autism Spectrum or have Multiple Disabilities. They struggle with basic communication skills and need to learn to navigate the world as independently as possible in order to achieve success.
My Project
Using the LeapFrog ClickStart will jump start my student's ability to utilize laptops and desktop computers. The LeapFrog will be the first step toward having students eventually move to using a traditional desktop computer to ultimately using a laptop. They'll gain confidence with using a keyboard to type on and using a mouse to navigate a computer, since many of them have primarily utilized touch-screen technology up to this point in their lives.
Having these skills will set them up for a future of independence in their personal lives and hopefully their careers.
The "games" we chose will help these students to work on their IEP goals of literacy and number sense in a fun, engaging manner.
