Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are an incredibly diverse population. They come from many different cultures and backgrounds. I have many students that have a primary language other than English.
Many of my students are on free or reduced-price lunch; this allows them to have free or reduced cost breakfast as well, but they are not able to actually get to school early enough every day to utilize this opportunity.
They work incredibly hard and are very attentive. Most of my students are preparing for college, some directly for career, and a few into the military.
We are trying to create a community of tolerance, acceptance, and compassion within our school and our teams/clubs. The school is so incredibly diverse (Religion, Ethnicity, Socio-economic, Single Parent Homes, Grandparent Homes, etc.), with many immigrants.
We have many of these immigrant families as part of our robotics and STEM programs and we try to create a new family for them within our town. We work diligently with these young people, many of whom are English Language Learners [ELL] and have left all of their friends at home to come here to the U.S. to start a new life. I am a mentor for our robotics team.
My Project
I was inspired by Ms. B's project for the FIRST LEGO League (FLL), a robotics competition for grades 4 - 8. She was requesting supplies for her robotics team to compete. This project covers part of the cost of registration fees, which include our kit of parts for the FIRST Robotics Challenge (FRC), the high school robotics competition.
The team meets after school, evenings, and weekends; we have 5 engineering mentors and we will be competing in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New Jersey, and hopefully at the World Championship.
FLL is a fantastic program where students learn to design, fabricate, and code a LEGO robot; FRC is for the older students and while FLL uses pre-made LEGO pieces, we design, fabricate, and code as well but with our own custom made pieces. My project will help my students become the next generation of scientists and engineers. FIRST wants to create an environment where engineering is held as high as athletics. This project includes the motors, transmissions, and electrical components for this competition season. The students will use these parts to build a robot and pass it off to the programming team who will code it in JAVA. [This is part 2 of a 4 part project]
Thank you so much for sponsoring our Mechanical Mustangs Robotics Team!
