Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are an incredibly diverse population. They come from many different cultures and backgrounds. I have many students that have a primary language other than English.
Many of my students are on free or reduced-price lunch; this allows them to have free or reduced cost breakfast as well, but they are not able to actually get to school early enough every day to utilize this opportunity.
They work incredibly hard and are very attentive. Most of my students are preparing for college, some directly for career, and a few into the military.
We are trying to create a community of tolerance, acceptance, and compassion within our school and our teams/clubs. The school is so incredibly diverse (Religion, Ethnicity, Socio-economic, Single Parent Homes, Grandparent Homes, etc.), with many immigrants.
We have many of these immigrant families as part of our robotics and STEM programs and we try to create a new family for them within our town. We work diligently with these young people, many of whom are English Language Learners [ELL] and have left all of their friends at home to come here to the U.S. to start a new life. I am a mentor for our robotics team.
My Project
This project was inspired by the FIRST LEGO League project from Ms. B. FLL is the program for the middle school teams and FRC is the program for the high school teams. Her project inspired us to create a project for our kit of parts, similar to her kit of parts which is the EV3 and accessories. Both of our programs have students solving real-world problems and doing research. Our FIRST Robotics Team is the high school varsity sport for the mind; we are part of the FIRST Robotics Challenge and we build a 120 lb 4 ft robot. The students learn how to design, fabricate, build, program, and compete with this robot. It contains pneumatics, electronics, motors, actuators, lighting systems, custom circuit boards, and various other items.
We could do this trip with only 2 nights overnight in Pennsylvania, but it is very important for our team to give back to others; because this trip is over spring break, we do not need to take days off from school to volunteer on Wednesday.
This project is specifically for the hotel rooms for the FIRST Mid-Atlantic Championship. We need 12 rooms a night for 3 nights, for a total of 36 nights. This project is part 1 of 3 for 12 rooms. This trip is from Wednesday through Saturday and our first day there we are volunteering to set up the field and the pit area for the competition. Our plan is then to go to dinner a at Lehigh Valley Laser Tag as a reward for volunteering our time all day.
Thank you so much for reading about our project and for helping us to create the next generation of scientists and engineers.
