First Lego League: The Beginning of Everything

My students need an Ev3 brick and a Lego Robotic's Core set to effectively train and build robots for First Lego League competition.

My Students

We are a math and science inner-city classroom in a large, urban district in Ohio. My class is an eclectic mix of students who are bilingual, over-age, accelerated, regular ed. and/or with special needs. Man, do they LOVE Lego Robotics! I am floored by the creativity of these kids.

First Lego League preparations have begun, and we need additional EV3 components to test our robotic creations.

Kids are working to create robots that will carry out the tasks in the competition. The problem is that we only have one EV3, which is the brains of the robot. The EV3 is essential to create and test what the students have programmed.

My Project

We are very new to Lego Robotics, and learning so much every day! We are so grateful to have a class start-up pack for Lego Robotics. Unfortunately, having eight kids share a small set of supplies breeds frustration. In order to fully immerse them in problem solving and design, they need to have more materials. They need to have small groups all working at once so they can bounce ideas between groups and learn from each other.

Real learning happens when all hands are in and students can compare multiple solutions as they work through a problem or design.

By acquiring an additional Ev3 brick, the brains of the robot, as well as a Core Set of materials, students will be able to successfully complete their robots. They will have a second Ev3 in the Core Set, allowing three robots to be build at once, and three groups of students to be fully engaged in STEM learning..
