it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
“There are no seven wonders of the world in the eyes of a child. There are seven million.” - Walt Streightiff
My first graders are full of wonder! They embrace every opportunity to learn and the progress they make from September to June is remarkable!
My first graders are so excited about learning!
Each day they come to school eager to dive into the day's lessons and activities. For my students, school is their safe haven. My school is located in an urban area and, while it's fairly safe, it's my responsibility and privilege to create a classroom environment which allows them to feel safe enough to take risks and learn. Most of my students speak two languages - English and Spanish. All of the students in my class receive free breakfast and lunch daily. They live in homes with their families, and often other families, and have very little to call their own. All of the students in my classroom are so low, academically, that they are entitled to supplemental support services, which include basic skills instruction. It's my challenge and goal every year to take them from not knowing their letters or letter sounds, as they enter first grade, to reading at grade level as they prepare to exit my classroom in June.
My Project
These Boogie Boards are similar to the old-fashioned Etch a Sketch toys that we played with as children. Of course, in my classroom, they will not be used for drawing and playing. I envision my students using these in my Guided Reading groups as well as independently in order to practice sight words, spelling words, and vowel patterns or rhyming words. I believe that this simple, yet different form of technology, will speak to my firsties and deeply engage them in the learning process. By using the Boogie Boards, my students will practice words we've learned or explore and build words, recording them on these boards. Regardless of how they are used, my students will be more excited to practice their words on these boards than simply writing them on paper with pencils. I also envision them being used in group work and as a way to quickly record responses without wasting paper (which is also a limited commodity in my school)!
Donations to this project will certainly improve my classroom!
My first graders will be eager to take on tasks using the Boogie Boards. Writing spelling words or recording sight words will be exciting when this technology is made available to them! Incorporating these Boogie Boards into my classroom could only benefit my first graders! I believe it will assist them as they learn to read and write...making learning more engaging! Your donations to this project would be greatly appreciated!
