My Students
Each day, first graders depend on me to teach them how to read, write, and develop problem-solving skills that will be the foundation of their education. These students come from a variety of diverse backgrounds. Their families qualify for free lunch and often do not have the means to provide literature, manipulatives, and other educational tools at home. So, I feel it is my role to provide them with rich learning experiences on a day to day basis.
Due to their backgrounds and limitations in resources at home, my students often enter elementary school significantly behind their more affluent peers.
My Project
This year, my students have made leaps and bounds in their journey of becoming readers. They have learned to embrace both fiction and nonfiction texts and are daily demonstrating a love of reading.
The next step in their reading journey is to experience reading about current events.
This will help them understand that reading serves a purpose beyond entertainment or learning academic information.
As my students become citizens, I want them to understand that news sources help them become informed about the world around them. Publications such as Scholastic News will give them the introductory experience with reading to understand the world around them and see beyond their own small community.
