My Students
Teaching 1st grade students to read requires a wide variety of levels of books, as each student comes in at his/her own independent level. These levels can range greatly at such a young age. Many of my students enter 1st grade with a strong level of background knowledge due to the amazing work from the Kindergarten teachers at Pleasant Valley Elementary School. This strong foundation requires me to have leveled texts that go beyond just 1st grade in order to continue to challenge my students and strengthen their reading skills. In addition to differing reading levels, the students have differing interests in reading materials. Our school is one of the smaller schools in our District and has a country feel to it. Many of my students' interests are founded in this amazing community that has a small town country feel to it. This adds to the importance of having a variety of texts for my students to choose from.
Some students prefer nonfiction texts, while others prefer fiction texts.
Having a wide variety of leveled books within a classroom gives each student access to reading materials at his/her independent reading level.
My Project
My students will be provided with fiction and nonfiction leveled readers that will allow them to apply and build on their reading skills they have learned.
As their reading skills increase, leveled readers will allow my students to read books of increasing difficulty.
It is important for students to read both fiction and nonfiction. By having leveled readers for both genres, students will build their decoding, comprehension and fluency skills throughout both genres.
Finally, it is important for students to have a large variety of books to choose from in order to foster reading for enjoyment, as well as knowledge.
