My Students
I am so excited to learn alongside and teach 51 incredible first grade scholars! I teach at a Title I, inclusive, bilingual school in Washington, DC. Many of our students receive free and reduced lunch, receive special education services, and are English Language Learners. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and come with diverse needs, which requires a lot of planning and additional supports for a successful school year.
We want our students to think of themselves as writers, readers, mathematicians, social justice agents, and scientists.
We want them to think critically and construct meaning in meaningful ways. They are eager to learn and to share their expertise (yes, first graders have expertise).
To have a successful school year where students feel loved, valued, and safe, we want to create an environment in our classroom that accepts and respects everyone.
My Project
Our diverse learners come with diverse skill sets and needs. Research shows that students are more successful in the classroom when they can wiggle while they work. Our school is focusing on teaching the whole child. With that, we are arranging our classroom to attend to the needs of all students and their respective learning types.
We have a range of active learners, and some students in our class have been diagnosed with ADHD and developmental delay.
In our flexible seating class, we need 6 wobble chairs and 6 bouncy bands to improve students' focus while learning. Both award-winning tools have been proven to help our range of learners, because they provide a physical challenge and opportunity to release energy while simultaneously working. We need you to help us have a successful school year as we continue our work to teach the whole child.
