This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a school where many of my students come from families that are economically disadvantaged. Our school is considered high-poverty and approximately seventy percent of our students receive free lunch.
I teach 18 students who come from so many different backgrounds, but who all have one thing in common: a desire to learn and play!
The students that come to me every day are silly, smart and curious about the world around them! They take pride in everything they do and there is nothing quite like experiencing the world through their eyes.
My Project
My students love reading books and this shows by their love of our cozy carpet area! We have flexible seating, cozy book chairs and pillows, and a beautiful, inviting carpet with the help of our donors.
To complete our reading area, we really need some new book bins to line the perimeter of the carpet and provide students access to themed, leveled books that they can enjoy together.
Currently, we have a couple of bookshelves which my students LOVE, but which don't fit on the carpet so the students don't have as ready access to books as I'd prefer. With the addition of these book bins, I can line the carpet with books and swap them out occasionally to continue to give access to new, exciting materials for my students. I believe that doing this will expose them to different types of books, provide experience with operating a vast classroom library, and foster a love of nonfiction as well as fiction texts.
