First Graders Need Fun Phonics and Reading Centers!
My students need a set of folder games to target reading comprehension and phonics skills, as well as guided reading comprehension sets to build strong readers!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is buzzing with energy! My students come in excited to learn each day, and this is apparent in their classwork and willingness to try new things. Each day is full of new experiences with this group of little learners!
My students come from all areas of our city, and their families come from many different countries.
We have a very diverse population, which consists of many students who speak English as their second language, many different socioeconomic standings, and many different ethnicities and cultures. My students do not just learn from me; they learn from each other.
My school is a magnet school, which means we pull our students from all over the city. We have grown exponentially over the years, going from 450 students when I started, to 720 today. Our students are amazing children who work hard, and this shows in their work ethic, eagerness to learn, and (most importantly) the busy hum of activity you hear upon entering our rooms!
My Project
My students came to me at varied levels of reading readiness. Some students were still mastering their vowels, while other students were reading full story books. I would love to use these folder games and comprehension activities in the classroom, and more specifically in my reading and phonics blocks. My class is quite familiar with folder games, but the ones we currently have are just a bit easy for my higher leveled children. The addition of these games into the classroom would allow my students to be challenged in their phonics skills and to practice skills on their level. I am also requesting guided reading sets which target comprehension. It is my hope to be able to use these with children at all levels. These games and activities would better allow me to target instruction and differentiate for my students within their reading groups, which is powerful!
I know this project will bring much needed resources to my students.
There are several skills that, as a teacher coming from a kindergarten classroom, I have had to make the resources for... especially during phonics! This project will allow my students to have easy access to engaging games that will help them progress to second-grade-ready scholars!
