First Graders Need Comfy Couches For Flexible Seating!
My students need a flex-space comfy couch and chair to provide flexible seating that is children sized, cozy and will allow for fun spots to sit during our literacy block!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a school where many of my students come from families that are economically disadvantaged. Our school is considered high-poverty and approximately seventy percent of our students receive free lunch.
I teach 18 students who come from so many different backgrounds, but who all have one thing in common: a desire to learn and play!
The students that come to me everyday are silly, smart and curious about the world around them! They take pride in everything they do and there is nothing quite like experiencing the world through their eyes.
My Project
My first graders love our literacy block. When you walk into our classroom, you can see twenty empty seats during literacy because they are sprawled all over the classroom, busy at work! The children in my room love to have their own space to work on writing, talk to peers about books and read independently. It is hard to do this without lots of options for cozy seating on a hard floor.
My students voted on this project and chose to request comfy couches to sit on during their literacy block.
We had a classroom discussion and they decided that this would be the perfect addition to our classroom, so they can sit together and work on books in pairs. The addition of the couch and chair will allow for new seating options for the children which will be kept on the classroom rug. They would love sitting there during reading and writing and said that because they are such soft seats. They would be perfect for our room! It is going to be awesome for the kids to have chosen their own project and to be able to watch it executed!
