My Students

Our school is in one of the most diverse neighborhoods in the country.

Our students come from diverse backgrounds: Vietnamese, Ethiopian, Somali, Mexican, African-American and white. The diversity and the way these children notice and yet don't notice it, is vibrant and endearing. All of my students have personal and unique cultures that make them who they are. Those cultures need to be seen and valued in order to build a real community where we trust and support one another. Then, anything is possible. My students are capable, ready, and they deserve to have the best resources available.

My Project

First grade is at the beginning of our students' academic lives. They are just starting to gain independence and a sense of who they are as learners. I know that my students can leave my classroom ready for second grade if we (myself, my students and their parents) all work hard enough with the right resources. Currently though, our library is missing high-interest, beginning chapter books and graphic novels that will fuel my students' interest in independent reading. These books include diverse characters, modern storylines and just plain silly plots that first graders love. When kids become really interested and intrinsically motived by books, their time reading increases. This leads to much better outcomes for them as learners. Thank you for helping make this happen for my kiddos. We appreciate you!
