Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Everyone is a reader. Some just haven't found their favorite book yet." I want my students to find their love of books and reading at a young age.
First graders start the school year excited about learning to read!
To make this goal a reality, they must get repeated practice with books that are right on their level. My students practice a lot during guided reading, a time when small groups of students read and share an interesting book.
My school serves a low-income population with 90% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Our students are also very diverse, and 70% of them are identified as minority students. Many factors outside of school affect our children and their learning. Still, they come to school each day eager to learn. My goal is to provide instruction that makes our students feel successful and builds their love of learning.
My Project
With a well-rounded guided reading library, the first grade teachers can build that love of learning. We can match small groups of students to texts that meet their individual interests and needs as readers. A wide variety of texts is necessary to grow all children into confident, well-rounded readers. The first grade teachers will use the guided reading library to plan lessons catered to groups of 5-6 students. The students will read, discuss, and respond to the text individually and as a small group. In this format, students experience success because the selected texts are right at their level and they are supported by peers with skills and interests similar to their own. Children progress through the reading levels as they develop strategies to read unfamiliar words. They simultaneously learn how to comprehend and evaluate the texts they share through discussions with one another and with the teacher.
Children need to feel successful in order to persevere as learners.
My students need guided reading book sets to build reading fluency and comprehension. It will help my students find a variety of interests in the world of fiction and nonfiction stories.
