Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Every day we practice reading independently. For some students, it is the best time of the day. But for the majority, it is frustrating. While many students need my help, I cannot get to everyone all the time. Tag readers would allow my students to work on reading independently and feel successful.
My students are an inquisitive group of students.
They are also eager to learn to read and spell and do this independently. My students enjoy a variety of book titles and are attracted to books that we have read together or have movie titles. These children come from hard working families that feel that reading is important. However, many parents wish they could help their children, but they cannot because the English language is not accessible to them. Most of the children at our school are learning to read, write and speak in English as a second language.
My Project
Encouraging children to read independently is key. The Tag readers from Leapfrog, along with their books, allow children to read a book on their own. It allows children to practice their reading fluency (how fast they read), their accuracy and their comprehension skills on their own. Any child can take a Tag reader book, practice reading it and get help with each word in the text or just get help when needed. In addition, I can monitor a child’s progress, by simply connecting this device to a computer. Once a student feels empowered when reading, their possibilities of success will be endless.
In addition, spelling practice for young readers is necessary. Magic boards are an extra resource that helps children spell long vowel words with the help of a picture. Children write the word with a marker included, then they may check their answers by looking in the back of the card and comparing their results. These boards will help to reinforce our daily dictation lessons.
Students may learn to read and spell during reading time.
However, once they master these skills, they will transfer to any subject or even during a state or district exam. By supporting this project, you will have made a positive and meaningful impact on the life of each student and their families forever.
