Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are energetic, shy, inquisitive 1st graders. Ethnically our school is about 55% Latino, 20% African-American, and 10% Asian, and 5% White. About 50% of my students are English Language Learners of varying abilities, the rest are native English speakers. They attend a Title I, inner-city school in a community oriented neighborhood. My students and their families enjoy participating in school sponsored events.
My students desire to be challenged academically, grow exponentially, and learn mindfully.
In spite of the economic disparities and other difficulties my students face, I believe that they all can achieve greatness.
My Project
Hands-on learning is a great way for young students to see that they can achieve great tasks. My students were born into a world filled with ever changing technology, and I want to give them the opportunity to build, manipulate, and better understand a small part of their technological world.
Through basic coding, my students will develop their teamwork, and problem solving skills, which will help them better understand science and math concepts as well as give them basic vocabulary needed in understanding 21st century concepts.
With the aid of an iPad, Osmo, and Doodle Bots, my students will learn how to manipulate a robot or character to compete a task. They will have hands on experience with, "trial and error" and building perseverance in the scientific process as they work in teams to complete a task. With the help of these tools and through classroom instruction, my students will acquire basic tools and vocabulary needed to to advance in their technology skills in the years to come.
