Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first grade teacher in a diversified urban school. There are 20 students in my class of which 60% receive free or reduced lunch. Currently I have 6 ESL students in my class and that number grows each year. I am responsible for teaching all the curriculum, a major portion of which is writing.
Writing in first grade can consist of a sheet of paper with a string of letters to a well-written paper with punctuation and standard spelling. There are many levels of mastery and I need to be able to teach each child at whatever level they are currently working.
One way I can accomplish this goal is to create a writing center. My students would have an opportunity to visit this center everyday and experience writing. They would write in journals, make lists, thank you cards, recipes, and letters to classmates, parents, or even strangers. They would have many opportunities to write and to experience the writing process. In this center my students will need writing tools, paper, and learning tools to help them create sentences, words, and paragraphs. Providing students with a variety of markers, pencils and paper is highly motivating, even to the students who are struggling with writing. These items make writing much more inviting.
Developmentally, it is essential for students to have as many opportunities to write and to experience the writing process. They must be taught how to write well. It is not a skill that they just acquire and use one time, but a skill that when taught correctly, will help them throughout their life. I want this experience for my children and with your help I can accomplish it.
