This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is located in Colorado, in a loving but high-needs neighborhood where many families are struggling to learn English as a second language. My students LOVE coming to school and I want to make sure that they have the best materials to help them reach their learning goals.

My first grade students are starting the school year as very hesitant young writers.

Many of them enjoy our daily writing lessons, but feel a lot of stress to spell words correctly, stay on topic, and add enough sentences. To help students feel more comfortable with writing, and to help them develop their skills in a more fun and natural way, I created a writing center that students visit daily. The writing center is a place where kids can free write on white boards and on paper about anything they want. After only a few weeks of this kind of writing freedom, I am already seeing students more excited and confident about their skills!

My Project

Our writing center challenge is that we do not have interesting things for the students to write with- only the crayons and pencils that the students brought with them on the first day of school. My class has expressed that they would be even more excited about writing letters, stories, and books if they had colorful markers and other fun writing tools to make the process and our center feel more creative and special. This grant is for high quality crayons, colored pencils, and markers that my students can use to create their wonderful works of writing art!
