My students need a classroom library! We would love to fill it with books such as Hop on Pop, Stuck, The Day the Crayons Quit,and historical biographies to e used during our Daily Five.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My first graders are learning how to choose books on their own, but we are facing the challenge of having a rather lack-luster classroom library and no school library. We need a good set of quality books to get excited about reading together and individually.
I am the fourth teacher that has been with this classroom, so they have had a pretty rocky start to the first grade.
The students embodies the diversity that Los Angeles is known for. A strong majority of the students are English Language Learners. The students are eager to learn and share their stories. We are currently learning how to read independently and how exciting books can be. New Horizons Charter Academy is a very small and new school. There is a huge focus on doing everything digitally. While this is a skill that students need to be successful in the future, they also need physical books to pick up and go on an adventure with.
My Project
The students will be reading these books on a daily basis. We are using the Daily 5 system in which students are learning to build stamina and read independently. The students need books that will get them excited about reading through their entire life. These books will also help students learn how to find books that fit their interests and their reading abilities.
Learning in a print-rich environment will make a huge difference in how the students feel about the room.
Providing the students with tools to get them excited about learning will encourage them to push themselves throughout their entire life.
