This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
By the end of first grade, children typically know at least 150 “sight words,” or common words, such as “the” and “no,” that they recognize with ease. They learn sight words through repeated exposure in reading and by using these words over and over again in their own writing.
My class is full of curious little six and seven year old boys and girls.
They are surrounded by a print rich environment. We have anchor charts, labels, student work, shared writing, and much more hanging around the classroom. I emerge my students into a child centered learning environment. I teach in a thriving school district with families that want the best for their children. I want to help to give them the best and to be my best! We are working very hard here to help them to see that they can be and do anything they put their minds to.
My Project
The sight word building materials will help me to give my students repeated exposure to the words they need. The repetition is needed so greatly to attain the sight word knowledge that they need to have before they move on to second grade. Students will work with partners during workshop time using engaging and fun learning tools!
First graders are required to know almost 200 words by the end of the year. The sight word building materials will help make that goal a reality for my students. I will be able to make sure they are carrying the knowledge home and practicing even there.
My students need a variety of ways they can acquire the words they need to know.
I want to reach all learners. I can do that through songs, games, poems, and of course reading. These materials will give me the variety I need to keep the children engaged and motivated!
