My Students
Our school district works hard to support teachers in the science, but it often takes a backseat to reading, writing, and math. Isn't that what science is though? I believe that science allows exciting content for incorporating reading, writing, measurement, and data display in an exciting way.
These students are naturally inquisitive.
They are thinkers and doers. They get excited about almost everything. These are also the students experiencing pressure and punishment from the achievement gap we all hear about. They are Vietnamese-speakers and Somali-speakers. They are in the racial minority. They are Amharic-speakers and Tagalog-speakers. They are at risk, and we, as a school community, have to assuage that risk. They are Spanish-speakers. They are Sonike-speakers and Arabic-speakers. They are Kirundi-speakers. They are sons and daughters, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, brothers and sisters.
These students face much pressure. Our school asks for 1.5 years of growth from each student, each year. They take standardized tests three times a year (five for English Language Learners). Time is precious for us all, and there are extremely high academic expectations.
My Project
In all elements of my teaching, I hope to teach thinking independence. I want students to leave school each day more prepared to solve their own problems. This list of science materials will help them to do this while also having fun.
Our Balls and Ramps unit focuses on experimental design through a series of physics experiments. For safety, I am asking for child safety goggles (yes, they are neon!). For data collection I ask for clip boards and stop watches so they may record and compare their findings. Drawing conclusions is a leap for first grade students, so having such a tangible, engaging method will help students learn.
I expect these materials to help my students ask questions that have solutions they can test themselves. The experiments require students to work together and compare data. These materials will help to foster this independence as well as get all of these students excited about learning.
