My classroom is made up of 24 sweet first graders! 12 boys and 12 girls. My students are so eager to learn and have a love for books! Over half of our population is from low income families. Our school is located in a small town of Mississippi, home of Ashley furniture. My hope this year is to use science and social studies topics that my students are interested in to teach a large majority of our reading standards.
These weekly scholastic news issues will give my students experience using classroom magazines. I have worked to have a very rich classroom library for the past several years but I think having these magazines will be an even greater tool for my students. My hope is that these magazines will bring a renewed interest in reading with each new issue. Scholastic news will help reach my students through their specific interest that even some books may not accomplish. They also have fun things for kids such as jokes, recipes, etc. also, these lightweight magazines are easy for students to transport home and there is no harm done if the magazine is lost or ruined like there would be with a text book or library book.
