I teach first grade in a charter school in Washington, DC. My students are entirely low-income and all receive a free or reduced lunch.
In the early elementary grades, routines are extremely important to learning. We begin every day with a calendar routine, math facts practice, and work on our graph of the week. This helps my students to master the skills they need to be successful mathematicians for life.
I have found though, that there is so much more I could do with our routines if I had better materials to use. The calendar wall I requested has opportunities for my students to practice not only their calendar skills but also, money, time, place value, and skip counting. The other materials I requested reinforce these basic skills in a way my self-created tools have not.
You can help create the foundation of mathematic skills in an amazing group of first graders. As they practice their math with fun, engaging, and appealing materials, they will be on the road to success in the future.
