This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My incredible first graders attend school in California. Our school is a Title I school. Our first-graders are a diverse group of learners. Our classroom is within an older building and does not have a classroom rug. We need a rug with 24 designated spots to sit, to provide a place for all learners to sit comfortably. Teaching reading is a passion of mine, and I have an M.S.Ed. in reading and literacy. In Lodi Unified, we use SIPPS to teach students to read. SIPPS is systematic and explicit phonics, phonemic awareness, and sight words instruction. To teach vocabulary, oral language, and comprehension, we use Journeys. The Journeys lessons include time for “turn and talk.” The classroom rug will facilitate both “strands” of reading instruction.

This colorful classroom rug will allow my 24 first graders to each have a designated place to sit for foundational literacy and language comprehension lessons.

Students will all be able to see and easily engage in “turn and talk” discussions during read-alouds.
