This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from very diverse backgrounds and bring many special qualities to my classroom. As a Title I School, many of my students are eligible for free and/or reduced-priced lunch and often lack the basic supplies necessary to be successful students.
While we are all different, we have much to learn from each other.
As a school, we are trying to create a sense of school community. The morning announcements bring together our school and share information about what is going on in our school and community.
My Project
This school year, I have been challenged to teach reading to young first graders. In previous years, I have taught all intermediate elementary students therefore my classroom library closely reflects the interest of older students. I would like to have a combination of picture books, graphic novels, and chapter books that will inspire and encourage my students to read books this school year. The books selected for this project reflect popular children's books, Caldecott winning books, and books that teach a growth mindset. In addition, a Scholastic magazine subscription would encourage students in my first grade class to read non-fiction text. Finally, I have selected class sets of novels to introduce my students to the wonderful world of chapter books!
