Help me give my students a leveled library where they can book shop and take books out of the library that is just right for them. These books will support student growth and give them confidence!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach first graders at a Title I school in Las Vegas, Nevada. My students are creative, thoughtful, and always excited to learn new things. They treat each other with respect and kindness. Frequently, my students go above and beyond the expectations I've set for them. Each student I work with has made growth already this year due to their hard work and determination. Each day I am proud of the students in my classroom for their motivation towards achieving their goals!
My Project
First grade is a critical year for readers! We begin first grade at a level D (4), and by the end of first grade, we are expected to be reading at a level I (16). Having access to quality books at each reading level is vital for student success.
Having a leveled library in the classroom is critical for students at all levels.
In our classroom, students will book shop at their level and then practice reading the books to their peers or independently. They will have the opportunity to bring books home and read them to their families. In order to use the leveled library effectively, students would need book bags to take home the books so they can keep track of them. We also need bookcases to house the books so they can be used in an organized manner.
Covid has put our learning behind, and some of us are below grade level. Having access to more books and books at specific levels will allow students to gain more experience reading books, which many missed out on previously. Precisely, this aligns to the NVAC standard: RF 1.4: Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension.
My goal for my students is to make one year's worth of growth in reading. The best way for them to become better readers is to have access to books that they can read, that support their growth as readers!
