First Grade Kids Need Active Play Equipment to Get Moving!
My students need a basketball hoop, mini-basketballs, a playground equipment cart, and an active play set with hula hoops, kickballs, jump ropes, and beanbag toss supplies, to help them get moving and working together during recess!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach in a school where most of my students come from families that are economically disadvantaged. Our school is considered high-poverty, and approximately 70% of our students receive free lunch.
I teach 20 students who come from so many different backgrounds, but who all have one thing in common: a desire to learn and play!
The students that come to me every day are silly, smart, and curious about the world around them! They take pride in everything they do, and there is nothing quite like experiencing the world through their eyes.
My Project
"I'm bored!" is a unfortunately a common phrase during our recess time. My students are super active kids, who love to play with others. They always TRY to create games with groups of students, but we just don't have the equipment for all of these students to be able to play safely with one another. This often results in fighting and tears!
I teach at a school with a very small playground, but lots of open space to play in; unfortunately, we just don't have the equipment for the kids to use during playtime.
This is where my kid-inspired request for supplies comes in! A group of 6 little guys came up with the idea to get the same "stuff" they have in gym class - cones, hula hoops, basketballs, and balance tools - so they had something to do on the playground!
Currently, my students walk around the playground. Occasionally they play tag. Sometimes they go on the slides, but with 120 students at recess all at the same time, it gets pretty jammed on there. The addition of these playground resources will allow my students to move, play, and be active in a structured manner - facilitating team play, happier children, better cooperation skills, and less arguments on the playground!
