I teach first grade at a year-round, low-income and 99% minority school in NC. Every student in our school receives free or reduced breakfast and lunch. We are experiencing major budget cuts in NC and we do not have money for extras such as hands on explorations and scientific observations.
Research shows that hands on activities and observations are critical for students who struggle academically or behaviorally. My students do not have the background knowledge in gardening and nature observations that many children develop naturally by playing outside, gardening with their parents or observing nature. They are afraid of insects and bugs and do not think about where their food comes from. Taking control of your environment and maintaining clean, fresh living experiences only happens if you understand nature and are aware of the changes in life cycles. Science is not always a constant in many classrooms, I would like for my students to experience Science first hand!
Our class needs resources to learn how insects grow, where they live and how plants grow and what they need to thrive. These resources will give my students visual knowledge of plants and insects and their environment. Knowing how and why insects live enables students to respect them. To plant and watch seeds grow is a gift that my students will keep with them forever. Science is all around us, but my students need to be aware of their environment so they can help make our world a better place one day.
I would absolutely love for my students to have the opportunity that these resources would bring. By helping my class with these items you will give them a gift that will last forever.
