My Students
My door is always open to all my students all the time! My first graders love me and they love coming to school. My goal is to continue to inspire a love for learning in a happy safe environment.
My students live in a tough inner city in Massachusetts and have lots of adversity in their lives.
I have had children that have lost a loved one to gang violence. Some of my students have parents that are illiterate themselves. I also have had students that are homeless and live in shelters. Unfortunately, all the adversity my students have faced is out of their control and they suffer, as helpless children suffer the most. I want to empower my students and show them they are smart and can learn and they will succeed in life! My students are in desperate need of activities in school that they can enjoy and that can also enrich their learning.
My Project
I will be able to differentiate my teaching and meet my students' needs more efficiently, while my students are in learning centers. I have 29 students and in order for me to meet with every individual and see all my reading groups I have to have my students in cooperative center groups. Listening center activities and books will help provide my first graders the opportunity to listen to a good book and practice their word building skills. My students do not go home to print enriched environments. They often do not have someone that reads to them and many of my students have never even been to a public library. A listening center will provide such joy to my first graders and expose them to wonderful books.
The phonics and word building centers will provide students with a fun and interactive way to practice and reinforce their reading skills. These easy-to-use centers will give my students a fun, hands-on way to create their own words and stories and allow me to meet with all my group.
First grade is an extremely important milestone in my students lives.
They are learning how to read and write which is the key to their educational success for their future. They are also learning the basic fundamentals in math beginning with number sense, place value, addition and subtraction. I want my students to have a love for learning and not feel anxious. I want them to feel comfortable, safe, and secure that they will succeed, and always believe in themselves!
