First Grade Fundamentals: Academic, Social and Emotional Development

Help me give my students "The Little Spot Books", to help them learn about feelings people experience, and how to navigate them. Helping my students develop social emotional intelligence, understanding feelings, and creating coping strategies for feelings is my priority.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

On a daily basis, we talk about feelings in my classroom. In our morning meeting, everyone gets the chance to share what they are feeling and why. We use a colorful feelings chart with a little emoji face and a few feelings labels per picture. This helps students become more aware of all the feelings we can experience (both positive and negative feelings)! Often, throughout the day, we also address big feelings that come into play. We are mostly used to talking out situations and how others' actions made us feel, but I'd love to have an alternative method to help teach about feelings and coping strategies for when these feelings come about. My students also LOVE to read, so I thought this book set called "Little Spot of: SEL books" would be a very helpful tool for my little ones. This book set provides visuals, a hands-on plushie to sit with them while they explore or read the books, and our school counselor has told us how great these books are for students.

I was inspired to start a new Donors Choose project today after my students took a trip to the Hall of Science.

There was a makers station where every single student was enthralled by little wooden building blocks. I would love to replicate this experience for them in the classroom, so I'm hoping to get these wooden building blocks, to give my students the opportunity to be creative and work together to make magic happen.
