This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our scholars come from four different communities - two cities and two towns - to create a deliberately diverse school and culture. Our school serves a high poverty population, but because our school is deliberately diverse, the lives of two scholars who sit next to each other can be drastically different outside of school.

Inside the classroom, however, we are all One Team and One Family.

We learn together, help one another, and love each other.

I call them scholars because the children at our school work way too hard every day to be called anything else!

My Project

Our scholars work so hard each and every day to learn as much as possible about the world around them. First Grade's final Shared Text unit for the year is all about Animal Adaptations and focuses specifically on Arctic and Ocean animal adaptations. Scholars will be reading both non-fiction and realistic fiction books and writing informational pieces about animal adaptations they have learned about.

We believe that learning happens outside the classroom as well, especially with hands-on experiences!

A trip to Mystic Aquarium would provide scholars with the opportunity to see how the animals use the adaptations they have learned about in​ person!

They will get the opportunity to see (and hear!) a whale use their blowhole to breathe, learn about how blubber helps a sea lion stay warm, and watch penguins slide into the water on their bellies!
