This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Starting off the school year with community building activities is crucial as it helps foster positive relationships among students, creating a supportive and inclusive learning environment. I like to start the year off with a "Jump Party" activity, where students get to create their own STEM avatars that represents themselves.
Aside from being a very fun and hands-on activity, the avatars will be used in subsequent activities to teach students important science skills such as how to graph, use computational thinking skills, create data stories, and encourages students to think about their own STEM identities.
To create these avatars, my students will need the jumping spring toys and craft supplies like feathers, googly eyes, pom-poms, toothpicks, pipe cleaners, and glue that I am requesting. The jumping spring avatars will be used during the lesson on graphing, where students will get to see whose avatar can jump the highest! This is a perfect activity that promotes collaboration, empathy, and a sense of belonging in my classroom, which will ultimately enhance academic engagement and overall student well-being throughout the school year! I appreciate any support you can offer to make this first-day-of-school project come into fruition!
