This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My sweet little first grade students are struggling readers and I am attempting to incorporate listening to great audiobooks into our regular reading routine. It is my goal to help children not only learn to read but to learn to LOVE reading. I want to expose them to a variety of reading experiences, giving them the opportunity to develop confidence in their reading ability. My students are the children who are often overlooked and I want to help them succeed- becoming the best version of themselves they can be.

My Project

At our school, more than half of our 1st grade students are English Language Learners and most do not have access to books at home. My hope is that these books will create a spark of interest in my students so that they will become life-long readers and learners.

Each day my students have the opportunity to read to themselves or read to a friend.

It is exciting to watch them start to play with words, decoding sounds and blending them and hearing their vocabulary increase as the number of books they choose grows.

I will use these books to develop the five pillars of reading: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Reading stories together as a class, in small groups and one-on-one is a great way to model and inspire a love of reading.
