This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in my classroom are typical 21st-century students who gain the most knowledge and understanding from hands-on STEM activities. I want my students to leave knowing more than just spreadsheets, word documents, and clicking a mouse. I want them to be creators and inventors of the future.
We have experimented with Makey Makey, Squishy Circuits, MinecraftEdu, Ev3 Robotics, Ozobots, Scratch, Code, Raspberry Pi, 3Doodlers, MicroBits, Bloxels, Sphero Robots, and Stop Motion Video Creation.
For many of the students, school is the only place they have access to computers and the Internet and can learn about computer programming.
My Project
My students will use a combination of MIT App Inventor and the Kindle Fires to create authentic coding experiences. After learning how to program with the App Inventor, the students will then be able to create a fully functional app which can be shared with others who have Google devices.
As part of the 21st Century, my elementary students will learn how to be creators rather than just consumers of the digital world.
They will be able to use the Kindles for both testing their product and then to share it with their class and others. The ability for every student to have their own device for programming will give all the students in my class an equal opportunity to learn.
