My Students
I have an amazing group of students, and most have a great desire to learn. Unfortunately, my students face some significant challenges. I teach special education in a low-income Title I school. This grant targets my upper grade students from fourth through sixth grade
My students have challenges ranging from Learning disabilities to Autism.
Despite the challenges we face, we are determined to build on student strengths to find success in each of their educations. Our unique challenges make us stronger.
My Project
The Kindle Fire has an amazing feature that is a blessing for struggling readers. I can purchase great ebooks that are popular and exciting for students with the accompanying audio book, and students can listen to these books as the words are being highlighted on the screen. This powerful feature opens a world of new books that were previously beyond reach to my struggling readers.
There is a significant amount of research that shows that the amount of exposure that students get to words has a direct impact on reading ability.
Great readers who read a lot are exposed to many more words making them better readers. Struggling readers instruction focuses on narrow word lists and phonetic skills. Because they never really engage in rich stories with a wide variety of vocabulary, they continue to get further behind.
The narrated audio books help to bridge the gap into great stories with rich vocabulary. At they listen to and follow along in these books, they are finally starting to catch up to their peers. In experiments with the few Kindles I had last year, I saw significant growth in reading comprehension and fluency for the kids who had this technology. Please help me expand this resource to all of my upper grade students by providing us with Kindle Fire Tablets, headphones and earbuds.
