Fire That Clay!

My Students

My students are wonderful! They come from diverse backgrounds. I have students in my class who have roots from Angola, Croatia, Somalia, El Salvador, and kids who were born and raised here in the United States. I love that they love to make art.

The children in my Rise and Shine come into my classroom with a smile on their faces every week.

They are excited to paint, to learn how to make new things with clay, or just play with clay, creating their own masterpieces.

My Project

Right now, the kiln we have is antiquated. The shelves are broken, and there is no way to load things properly, so it doesn't get used. These materials will make a difference by giving them a way to create a finished product.

Kids love to take home a beautiful finished product.

Without the support of shelves, the work cannot get fired in the kiln. I will teach them how to make various clay sculptures that will get fired in the kiln. Right now, I am using a self-drying clay called Mexo. It is much more brittle and breaks easily. When I have shelves, I can use a more durable clay that can be fired.
