Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most of my students are designated at-risk. Many of my students have fallen further and further behind throughout their years in school primarily because they lack resources at home.
My students are perfect examples of untapped potential.
Students make connections as they learn things in class, but I believe given more opportunities and resources, they would be able to take their learning and knowledge to higher level.
Many of my students have very little knowledge that extends past their own experiences and neighborhoods, and I think given the tools, their ways of thinking could be drastically expanded. Many of my students have knowledge of how to use technology, but because they don't always have it available, they haven't learned how to properly use it to help their education.
My Project
Our world is becoming increasingly dependent on technology. Students shouldn't be left behind simply because they come from families that don't have extensive technology at home.
Tablets in the classroom put endless knowledge at students' fingertips.
In my Language and Literature (or English Language Arts) classroom, a very simple way tablets can be used is to create an extension of topics covered in class by allowing for further research. When topics are discussed, students will be able to further research these topics, gather information for themselves, and then begin to make educated decision on where they stand in regards to the topic.
Our school also uses online reading tools (websites) like myon. Students would be able to read for enjoyment at their lexile level (reading level) and track their progress digitally in terms of reading abilities.
We also use vocabulary.com to enhance student vocabulary. Socrative and Kahoot are apps (or websites) where students can log in to a virtual game/quiz and show what they've learned. Tablets will make accessing these and endless other tools quick an easy. These tools help students stay engaged because they use a medium familiar and relevant to the kids, they allow the teacher to assess the students' knowledge at the same time.
Additionally, the cart and cases will ensure that these investments last a long time and help as many students as possible learn and grow.
